Charterer
The Charterer is responsible for securing, negotiating, and managing vessel employment through contracts of affreightment, time charters, voyage charters, or spot market agreements in compliance with U.S. flag shipping regulations. This role focuses on optimizing revenue, maintaining client relationships, and ensuring operational efficiency within the shipping market while adhering to U.S. government and maritime trade policies.
Key Responsibilities:
- Chartering Operations:
· Negotiate and secure time charters, voyage charters, and spot market employment for U.S.-flagged vessels.
· Develop and execute freight agreements, contracts of affreightment, and other charter party agreements.
· Monitor market trends, freight rates, and trade routes to identify new opportunities.
- Relationship Management:
· Build and maintain strong relationships with customers, brokers, agents, and stakeholders in the shipping and logistics industry.
· Serve as the point of contact for chartering inquiries and provide timely responses to clients and brokers.
- Market Analysis and Strategy:
· Conduct market research on commodity flows, tonnage supply, and competitive activities.
· Collaborate with the Commercial Manager to develop strategies for optimizing vessel utilization and profitability.
- Contract Management and Compliance:
· Draft, review, and execute charter party agreements, ensuring compliance with U.S. government regulations (e.g., MARAD, Jones Act).
· Work with legal teams to resolve disputes and protect company interests in contractual matters.
- Operational Coordination:
· Coordinate closely with operations, technical, and crewing teams to ensure smooth execution of chartered voyages.
· Monitor voyage performance and resolve any issues related to cargo handling, demurrage, or deviations.
- Reporting and Documentation:
· Maintain records of all chartering transactions and prepare regular performance and financial reports.
· Ensure all documentation aligns with U.S. flag requirements and other regulatory obligations.
Qualifications:
Education:
- Bachelor’s degree in Maritime Studies, Business, Logistics, or a related field.
Experience:
· Minimum of 3-5 years of experience in vessel chartering, commercial shipping, or logistics, preferably within U.S.-flagged operations.
· Knowledge of U.S. government contracts, the Jones Act, and MARAD policies is highly preferred.
Skills and Competencies:
· Strong negotiation and communication skills.
· Excellent understanding of charter party agreements, freight markets, and maritime trade regulations.
· Analytical mindset with the ability to interpret market data and financial reports.
· Familiarity with shipping operations and voyage management.
· Proficiency in chartering software and tools (e.g., IMOS, Veson Nautical).
Additional Requirements:
· Eligibility to work in the United States and comply with U.S. flag shipping regulations.
· Willingness to travel domestically and internationally as needed.
