Shipping Analyst – Tankers
Position Overview:
The Shipping Analyst will play a critical role in managing and optimizing shipping operations for a crude oil trading house. This position involves analyzing shipping logistics, coordinating vessel charters, ensuring regulatory compliance, and optimizing transportation costs. The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of crude oil trading, shipping markets, and global logistics.
Key Responsibilities:

Shipping Operations Management:
- Coordinate vessel chartering, including spot fixtures and term contracts, to support crude oil trading operations.
- Monitor vessel movements and manage voyage schedules to ensure timely delivery of cargoes.
- Liaise with shipowners, brokers, agents, and other stakeholders to optimize shipping logistics.

Market Analysis:
- Analyze global freight markets, including trends in charter rates, fuel prices, and port conditions.
- Provide insights and forecasts to support strategic decision-making in trading and shipping operations.
- Maintain a database of historical freight rates and shipping data for market analysis.

Cost Optimization:
- Evaluate shipping options and recommend the most cost-effective and efficient transportation methods.
- Monitor demurrage and detention costs, and take proactive measures to minimize them.

Compliance and Risk Management:
- Ensure adherence to international shipping regulations, including MARPOL, SOLAS, and local port requirements.
- Manage documentation for customs, insurance, and regulatory compliance.
- Assess risks related to weather, geopolitical conditions, and other factors affecting shipping routes.

Stakeholder Collaboration:
- Work closely with traders, operations teams, and finance departments to align shipping activities with trading strategies.
- Maintain strong relationships with external shipping partners, including shipowners and chartering brokers.

Performance Monitoring and Reporting:
- Track key performance indicators (KPIs) for shipping operations.
- Prepare reports on shipping costs, operational efficiency, and market conditions for management.
Qualifications and Skills:
- Bachelor’s degree in Shipping, Logistics, Business, or a related field.
- 3+ years of experience in shipping logistics, chartering, or crude oil trading.
- Strong understanding of shipping markets, vessel types (e.g., VLCC, Suezmax, Aframax), and freight rates.
- Familiarity with international shipping regulations and documentation.
- Proficiency in data analysis tools and shipping software (e.g., IMOS, Veson Nautical, or similar).
- Excellent analytical, communication, and negotiation skills.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced, high-pressure trading environment.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience in the crude oil or energy trading industry, specifically at a broker shop or trader/charterer
- Knowledge of maritime law and shipping insurance.
- Strong network within the shipping and logistics sector.
