Fleet Manager-Technical

Our client is seeking an experienced Fleet Manager to oversee an assigned fleet of vessels and manage the performance of Technical Superintendents. The role is responsible for ensuring vessels are operated safely, efficiently, and in full compliance with statutory, classification, environmental, and client requirements.

The successful candidate will act as the key point of contact for fleet performance, ensuring vessels remain trade-worthy, commercially effective, and maintained within approved budgets. They will provide leadership, coaching, and oversight to Superintendents, while also maintaining strong relationships with vessel owners and internal stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee the safe, compliant, and cost-effective operation of vessels within the assigned fleet.
  • Manage, coach, and support Technical Superintendents to ensure consistent fleet performance.
  • Monitor vessel budgets, technical performance, maintenance standards, inspections, defects, and KPI compliance.
  • Review Superintendent vessel visit reports and ensure corrective actions, deficiencies, and upgrade plans are properly followed through.
  • Plan Superintendent travel, vessel visits, leave cover, and backup duties to ensure continuous support for all vessels.
  • Visit vessels and owners’ offices as required to maintain asset value, service standards, and client relationships.
  • Ensure preparation and planning for dry dockings, surveys, repairs, and major maintenance events are completed in a timely and cost-effective manner.
  • Support Superintendents in preparing vessel budgets for stores, spares, repairs, surveys, upgrades, and dry dockings.
  • Liaise with Operations teams to support commercial performance, SIRE requirements, charter party compliance, and overall vessel efficiency.
  • Monitor crew appraisal processes for senior shipboard personnel and support talent development and promotion recommendations.
  • Identify fleet-wide issues or lessons learned and escalate matters requiring wider advisory or management attention.
  • Ensure vessels comply with all applicable rules, regulations, safety management systems, vetting requirements, and industry best practice.

Requirements

  • First Class Chief Engineer Motor licence from an IMO whitelist country; or
  • Degree in Marine Engineering, Naval Architecture, Mechanical Engineering, or a related discipline.
  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience as a Technical Superintendent; or
  • Minimum of 2 years’ experience as a Technical or Fleet Manager within the maritime industry ashore.

Key Knowledge & Skills

  • Strong knowledge of vessel operations, marine engineering, class and flag requirements, ISM, ISO, ISPS, and industry best practice.
  • Experience with technical budgeting, repair planning, dry docking, surveys, and vessel maintenance systems.
  • Good understanding of vetting, SIRE, TMSA, statutory regulations, and safe shipboard operations.
  • Familiarity with global ship repair infrastructure and negotiation processes.
  • Strong leadership, communication, stakeholder management, and problem-solving skills.
