Position Summary:

The Port Captain is responsible for overseeing the safe, efficient, and compliant operations of towing vessels within the company’s fleet. Acting as the primary liaison between vessel crews and shore-side management, the Port Captain ensures that vessels are operated in accordance with company policies, U.S. Coast Guard regulations, and other applicable maritime laws. This role includes crew supervision, operational planning, maintenance oversight, and safety enforcement.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Monitor day-to-day towing vessel operations, ensuring safe navigation and towing practices.
  • Conduct vessel inspections to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements and company standards.
  • Assist with crew scheduling, training, and performance evaluations.
  • Provide operational support to vessel Masters and crews, offering guidance on best practices and problem-solving.
  • Coordinate with the maintenance department to schedule vessel repairs and preventive maintenance.
  • Participate in audits, drills, and safety meetings to promote a strong safety culture.
  • Ensure compliance with Subchapter M, ISM Code (if applicable), and all local, state, and federal regulations.
  • Investigate marine incidents and accidents, providing reports and recommendations for corrective actions.
  • Assist in developing and implementing operational procedures and emergency response plans.
  • Support logistical coordination for crew changes, fuel, provisions, and equipment.
  • Maintain close communication with dispatch, customers, and marine terminals to support towing operations efficiently.

Qualifications:

  • U.S. Coast Guard license (Master of Towing Vessels) preferred or significant experience in tug/towboat operations.
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience in marine operations, preferably in tug and barge or towing industry.
  • Strong knowledge of towing regulations, Subchapter M, and maritime safety standards.
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work in a dynamic and fast-paced environment.
  • Proficient with maritime software and Microsoft Office Suite.
