Senior Technical Manager, Tankers – New York

Position Overview

The Senior Technical Manager is a leader in the technical department of this tanker owner. This role oversees the performance of third-party ship managers, manages drydocking projects, controls budgets, and ensures the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of the fleet. The position requires strong leadership, technical expertise, and financial acumen to align fleet management with the company’s commercial and operational objectives.


Key Responsibilities

  • Fleet Oversight

    • Monitor and evaluate performance of third-party technical managers, ensuring adherence to company standards, industry regulations, and operational KPIs.

    • Provide technical guidance to ship managers on vessel performance, maintenance, and compliance.

  • Drydock & Repair Management

    • Plan, approve, and supervise drydockings and major repairs.

    • Ensure drydock projects are delivered on time, within budget, and meet technical/operational requirements.

    • Review and approve repair specifications, shipyard selection, and vendor negotiations.

  • Budgeting & Cost Control

    • Prepare and manage the technical budget, including OPEX and CAPEX.

    • Track, review, and control costs related to maintenance, repairs, spare parts, and shipyard projects.

    • Ensure financial accountability and cost efficiency without compromising safety or quality.

  • Technical Leadership

    • Lead, mentor, and develop the in-house technical team.

    • Ensure clear communication and collaboration between internal stakeholders, ship managers, and external contractors.

    • Drive continuous improvement initiatives across the technical function.

  • Regulatory & Safety Compliance

    • Ensure fleet operations comply with international maritime regulations (IMO, MARPOL, SOLAS, ISM, Class, Flag).

    • Oversee vetting, inspections, and audits, addressing findings proactively.

    • Support a strong safety culture across the fleet and management teams.

  • Strategic Contribution

    • Support senior leadership in long-term fleet strategy, vessel upgrades, and sustainability initiatives.

    • Provide technical input into newbuilding or acquisition projects, when applicable.


Qualifications & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Marine Engineering, Naval Architecture, or related field (Master’s preferred).

  • Chief Engineer CoC or equivalent senior seagoing experience on tankers strongly preferred.

  • 10+ years’ experience in technical/fleet management, with at least 5 years in a senior leadership role.

  • Solid experience with tanker operations, drydocking, and working with third-party ship managers.

  • Strong budgeting, cost control, and contract management skills.

  • Proven leadership, team management, and stakeholder engagement abilities.
