Port Engineer
Port Engineer – San Diego, CA
The Port Engineer will be responsible for overseeing the operations, maintenance and repair activities, audits, and inspections of a fleet of harbor work vessels. The role requires a seasoned professional with extensive experience in marine engineering and a deep understanding of the operational requirements of harbor vessels. The Port Engineer will ensure that all vessels in the fleet are maintained to the highest standards of safety, reliability, and regulatory compliance.
Key Responsibilities:
- Maintenance & Repair Management:
- Develop, implement, and oversee comprehensive M&R programs for the fleet.
- Coordinate scheduled maintenance, emergency repairs, and dry-docking activities.
- Manage relationships with external contractors and vendors to ensure timely and cost-effective repairs.
- Monitor and track vessel performance, identifying areas for improvement and implementing solutions.
- Audits & Inspections:
- Conduct regular audits and inspections to ensure all vessels comply with industry regulations, safety standards, and company policies.
- Prepare vessels for regulatory inspections, ensuring all documentation and certifications are up to date.
- Coordinate with classification societies and regulatory bodies to address any deficiencies or non-compliance issues.
- Maintain detailed records of all inspections, audits, and corrective actions taken.
- Fleet Management:
- Collaborate with the other departments to ensure optimal vessel availability and operational efficiency.
- Monitor vessel condition and performance, providing recommendations for upgrades, retrofits, or decommissioning as needed.
- Ensure that all M&R activities are aligned with the operational schedules and requirements of the fleet.
- Budgeting & Cost Control:
- Prepare and manage the budget for M&R activities, ensuring cost-effective allocation of resources.
- Track expenditures and implement cost-saving measures without compromising on quality or safety.
- Provide regular financial reports and forecasts to the Fleet Operations Manager.
- Team Leadership & Training:
- Supervise and mentor a team of technical staff.
- Ensure all team members are trained in the latest M&R techniques, safety protocols, and regulatory requirements.
- Foster a culture of continuous improvement, safety, and accountability within the team.
Qualifications:
- Minimum of 5-7 years of experience in marine engineering, with a focus on maintenance and repair of harbor work vessels.
- Proven experience in managing M&R activities, audits, and inspections for a fleet of vessels.
- Strong knowledge of maritime regulations, safety standards, and classification society requirements.
- Excellent problem-solving skills, with the ability to make informed decisions under pressure.
- Strong leadership and team management abilities.
- Effective communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work collaboratively across departments.
- Proficiency in computer-based maintenance management systems (CMMS) and other relevant software.
